Communication—whether in relationships or in music—is vital. Poor communication can compromise everything: the final creation, the connection, the relationship itself. With good communication, however, relationships are preserved, and people can be open, clear, and willing to expose their vulnerabilities.

Communicating with your instrument—through your fingers, your hands, the act of writing music—is no different from communicating with another human, whether you’re writing a song or simply living life. To have a complete, unguarded conversation, you must remain as open as possible, both mentally and spiritually, embracing the risk of being hurt as you share your feelings and vulnerabilities in that moment.
